Carson Wentz to miss Season Opener, Possibly out until Week 5 or beyond?

My sources are telling me that Carson Wentz is very likely to miss Week 1 and quite possibly Week 2, and that it is entirely possible that he could sit out until Week 5, when the Eagles return home to face their NFC rival the Minnesota Vikings, whom they eliminated from the playoffs last year en route to their first ever Super Bowl victory. With the Vikings and Eagles both favorites to come out of the NFC, this would be a perfect game to bring back their MVP candidate.

As we all know, Wentz was having an MVP caliber season last year before suffering a brutal injury to the Rams late in the season. We also know that after he went down, Nick Foles was able to rally the team behind him, and win a Super Bowl for the city of Philadelphia! Now, less than one year after this injury, Wentz is back on the practice field, but how long until we see him in game action?

Last year, such was the story of Andrew Luck, where we were hearing that he was looking good, doing well in practice, and on schedule to play Week 1. Then there was doubt as to what week he would return, which then turned into him missing the entire season. While I don’t see Wentz missing the whole year, I could see Philly being VERY cautious as they hope to repeat as Champions. With Foles back with the team this year, the Eagles have the security of allowing Wentz to fully heal before letting him return to the field, but when will that actually be?

Let’s take a closer look at the Eagles’ first 4 weeks of the year:

Week 1 – They play at home versus a tough defense in the Atlanta Falcons. This is also the first game of the NFL season played early on Thursday Sept 6th.

Week 2 – The Eagles have 10 days off, and travel to face a Winston-less Tampa Bay squad, whose defense has been suspect in recent years, and should be an easy victory for Philly.

Week 3 – The Eagles come back home to face Luck and the Indianapolis Colts, which should be another easier game for them earlier in the season. On paper, this seems the most likely opponent to bring Wentz back into the fold but Foles could easily lead Philly to a victory as well.

Week 4 – Philly now travels to face an improved Titans defense in a harsh environment on the road, but this is still a very winnable game with Foles leading the way.

Which leads us to a Week 5 showdown, at home, versus a team they will probably be facing in the playoffs, the Minnesota Vikings! If Wentz were to be held out the first 4 weeks, and the Eagles were to go undefeated during that time, would Philly rush him back for this tough matchup? Maybe not… After this is a short week heading to New York to face the Giants Thursday night, then 2 BRUTAL defensive matchups with the Panthers and Jaguars before their Week 9 Bye Week.

So, while we might see Wentz play in Week 1 or Week 2 if given the okay by team doctors, it is just as likely we don’t see him until Week 5 or Week 10 this season.

For the fantasy nuts, this means draft him with caution and have a solid back up to plug in if he were to miss an extended period of time, just like the Eagles do.
